“I’ll tell you a funny story - Ed [Edward Watson, principal dancer] and I were recently in Japan doing advance prep for the company tour we’ll do there this summer. I was sitting in an interview room pretty much from 10 till 8 every day. One photographer came in, and I was standing there, he looked at me - and he ran out. Then he suddenly came back in, said, sorry he thought I was a doll!”

“But I remember once someone said to her (Margot Fonteyn), don’t you think it is too much - and they were talking about me - the way she lifts the legs like this. And she said, ‘Well, if I could have done it, I would have done it.’ (Laughs) And it was quite… pleasant to hear it from her. Because most of the time people talk for others, they were talking in a way for Margot, saying it should be like this because Margot did it like this. But maybe she herself is not thinking like that.”

"I really believe that if people knew how very difficult dancing is, rather like bull-fighting actually, they wouldn’t enjoy watching it quite so much."Margot Fonteyn
